A new program, MBF Teen Safety Matters™, was recently launched by the Monique Burr Foundation for Children to prevent child abuse and bullying among teen-agers.
Cheers: A Boost for Nonprofits Coming from Community First
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Community First Credit Union has always had a spirit of service due to its roots in serving educators. Now that spirit is being expanded with the Community First Cares Foundation.
This will allow Community First to extend its influence into nonprofits in the region, something beyond good events like Community First Saturdays.
With more than 100,000 members and 300 employees, Community First is large enough to have an impact on the quality of life in the seven counties it serves: Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, Baker, Flagler and Putnam.
Community First will have the only nonprofit foundation administered by a credit union in the region, the credit union noted in a news release. The foundation initially will be led by a board of directors who are employees of the credit union.
It’s probable that it will be expanded in the future with people not employed by the credit union. It would make sense, for instance, to have representation from people active in the foundation’s focus areas, just as the Times-Union does with the citizens’ members of the editorial board.
Poverty is a silent epidemic in our schools, and many issues with attendance and academics are directly related to students not having clean clothes, shoes that fit, or the supplies they need to be successful in school. Students want to feel good about themselves when they come to school, and we want to help them have everything they need to learn. We could not have opened our first on-site classroom-sized Giving Closet without this funding and volunteer support.
